FAQ’s for Mannington Floors Featuring Microban® Antimicrobial Product Protection

Q. What benefit do I get from Mannington floors with Microban® antimicrobial product protection?

Microban® antimicrobial product protection continuously helps prevent the uncontrolled growth of bacteria, mold and mildew that can cause stains, odors and product degradation. Microban® antimicrobial product protection provides an added safeguard to your normal cleaning by providing continuous antimicrobial product protection that is built into your flooring product.

Q. How does the Microban® technology work?

Microban® antimicrobial product protection helps prevent bacteria from growing and multiplying. More technically, Microban® works at a cellular level to continually disrupt the growth and reproduction of microorganisms that can contaminate a surface. The technology works by simultaneously attacking the protein, cell membrane, DNA, and internal systems of a microbe, causing it to die and not reproduce.

Q. Will the Microban® antimicrobial product protection wear off?

No, Microban® is built into the wearlayer of the floor.  It won’t wear off, your floor is protected for the life of the floor. However, effectiveness can be potentially reduced by putting polishes and wax coating on the product, which is not recommended.

Q. Is Microban® safe?

Yes. Consumer safety is a fundamental concern for us. The Microban® antimicrobial product protection used in select Mannington floors is approved by the US EPA. Because Microban®'s antimicrobial additives are built into the wear layer of our products, the antimicrobial product protection is there for the life of the floor. There is no spraying, wiping or applying a spray on cleaner and / or antimicrobial that would, in reality, only provide temporary antimicrobial product protection. Additionally, Mannington products never contain triclosan or triclocarban.

Q. Do I still need to clean my Mannington floor featuring Microban® antimicrobial product protection?

Yes. Normal care and maintenance is still needed to care for your Mannington floor. Below are links to our care and maintenance guides:

Note:  If you apply a coating to your floor, like a floor wax, the surface of the floor will be covered up, thereby potentially reducing the effectiveness of the Microban® antimicrobial product protection. Your Mannington floor does not need any coatings added to the floor.  

Q. Do I need to clean my Mannington floor featuring Microban® antimicrobial product protection with a special cleaner? 

No, normal care and maintenance is all that we recommend.

Q. Will Microban® protect my house from bacteria? 

No, the Microban® antimicrobial product protection is limited to the surface of the Mannington floors which feature Microban® antimicrobial product protection.  If you have other products in your house that also feature Microban® or other antimicrobial product protection, those surfaces may also be protected.  

Q. What part of the floor contains Microban®? 

The wearlayer, the very top layer of the floor, is where the Microban® antimicrobial product protection is, as seen in the figure below:  

Q. Where can I buy Mannington flooring featuring Microban® antimicrobial product protection?

Q. Does Mannington floors featuring Microban® antimicrobial product protection help prevent the coronavirus? 

No. There has been no test data to show that Microban® antimicrobial product protection on Mannington floors is effective in providing protection against viruses, including the Coronavirus.

Q. Is the Microban® 24 cleaner the same as the Microban® antimicrobial product protection on Mannington floors? 

No. The Microban® antimicrobial product protection on Mannington floors is different than Microban® 24 cleaning products. Microban® is built into the wearlayer of Mannington’s floors and is there for the life of the floors, it won’t wear off. Microban® 24 cleaners are cleaning products you spray onto surfaces you’d like to clean. Q. Does the Microban® antimicrobial product protection for Mannington floors contain Triclosan or Triclocarban? 

No, none of our products contain Triclosan (or Triclocarban).
